Christian Women & Soap Operas

By Kingdom of God Servant

For a long time out of my life since I was in Elementary School up until the age of 29 I watched soap operas. I went off and on and I was addicted to them. I thought I was going to watch them forever. They were a staple in my life. I watched shows like All My Children and the many marriages of Erica Cane. I watched the whole Jessica/Tess thing on One Life To Live. I even watched Sonny Corinthos and Jason Morgan on General Hospital. I think my favorite was probably General Hospital, BUT I had become addicted to them and I felt like I needed to watch them like medicine. Those of you who don’t know what I am talking about just follow along.

So that’s number one 1- They are addicting.
Now I have nothing against fine actors such as Maurice Benard, and Steve Burton who is a self proclaimed Christian. If General Hospital and other shows gets cancelled the one thing that will be sad is that so many good actors will lose their jobs. But even years after I stopped watching I had Jax, Sonny, and Jason in my dreams who are most if not all married people in real life and I became attracted to them in my dreams and had relationships with them on a subconscious level. The relationships they promote are not Biblical and they engage the mind in fantasy which can be damaging to the soul and spirit. They promote things which glorify lust, fornication, adultery, violence and pretty much the opposite of- “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” Philippians 4:8
I just noticed that it says to focus on things that are true – that is something to meditate on.

“20 And [Jesus] said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.
21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.” Mark 7:20-23
2) We are worshiping idols when we watch soap operas.
Because Jesus gave that warning it is very important to take heed to that our minds not be tainted with evil thoughts. Now I know some of you who love to watch soap operas might be saying, ”Aren’t there also some redeemable characteristics in soap operas like informing the public about issues such as Bipolar Disorder, Cancers, Rape, Teenage Sexuality, etc?” Granted some times they can be used to send a positive message, but to have to get to that message we are become attached to people and building relationships to people who are not even real and that can create an attachment to an idol, which can also be pretty dangerous.

3) Married women may start fantasizing about men.
Now I am not married, but I have had my own shares of dreaming about men in soap operas – granted my dreams were clean, but it’s almost like a romance novel. You let yourself get carried away by how a romance should be and how a relationship should be and you let that into your marriage. I don’t know actually how many women think of the actor on the soap instead of their own husband, but it is a possibility.

4) It takes you away from the time you could be spending in God’s Word and focusing on Jesus.
That is the major part of television these days. Most of the people spend their time watching television and these days it is filled with junk that is brainwashing this culture in what they should think, what they should wear, what they should eat. In this society entertainment fills up a large part of the day. You are looking to see a romance on television when you are missing out on a romance with a God who loves you.

I am guilty of missing my own relationship with Jesus because I let all other things take priority until He is the last thing on my day. Someone told me once that if you make a commitment of one hour everyday to something and become committed to it, after a while you would become an expert on that thing. I was becoming an expert on soap operas. I even did my term papers on Soap Operas because it was the only thing I knew anything about, had any passion for, or wanted to pursue, that and maybe my teenage crush on a pop idol from the 80′s and 90′s, which also turned out to be dangerous. These things tend to become fillers for what your heart is really hungry for. It is hungry for the Word of God. You want soap operas read about David and Solomon. The Song of Solomon might even have some soap operas blushing, but not having Jesus as the most important relationship or person or desire in your life can lead you down a path where you don’t want to be.

5. Why would you want to be tied up in someone else’s drama when life itself has it’s own drama these days?
Life has it’s own dramas – take for example what happened to Osama bin Laden. Hey it’s a David and Goliath story in real life. Maybe that’s why reality shows are becoming more and more popular. People are tired of seeing fantasy. They want what is real. That doesn’t mean we can’t be dreamers. I used to be a dreamer, then a realist, and now a dreamer again, but we need to hold on to our virtues and values before they get taken away from us and I am not just talking about Christians. I am talking about all of us. We have let the media control us these days, and we need to realize what the true intent purpose is of media.

I was looking at all the cars on the freeway today and I realized that God has made this stretch of land so wide and vast that we need cars, planes, and ships, and that we cannot navigate it on our own. God knew that people would not be able to stretch the whole world by feet, and horses so he has helped us come up with technology that just amazes people and has done things like never before. I know that the only reason God helped us create these technologies is to help in the spreading of His Word throughout the earth. So just keep that in mind the next time you sit down on the couch watching a soap opera. Ask yourself is this really what God would want?
