Let Go of Anger

But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice,
slander, and filthy language from your lips —Colossians 3:8

Doesn’t this verse sound so good? We all want to be anger free and live a life full of laughter, smile, and joy. However, reality shows us a different picture. When I used to read this verse, I thought that God theoretically desires us not to get angry yet He understands that it’s unrealistic. Wrong! The verse clearly says: “You must also rid yourself of…anger.” Just as God is serious about living worry free (Matt6:25,31,34), so is He about living anger free. In this area of anger, we tend to be like Paul who said in Rom7:15,18-19:

“For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I
hate…For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the
good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.”

Don’t we feel like that all the times? We wish to stop getting angry then the very next thing we know someone irritates us and we lash out. So, how in the world do we get rid of anger???
I believe it starts by grasping the danger anger poses in our walk with Christ. Ephesians 4:26-27 tells us that anger opens the door for the devil to operate in us if we don’t immediately reject it. We certainly don’t want to be Satan’s channel. Hence, keeping this reality in mind will prompt us to think twice about getting angry, and if we mistakenly do, we should right away be sober and get rid of anger. Paul adds at the end of Romans 7: “Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!” v.24-25. So I say to us all: “May the Lord Jesus help us!”
