Preparing For Marriage Special Edition
The devil is against marriage, he never tempted Adam until Eve came into the picture. When Satan attacks and destroys union in a couple, he can then have access to the children for their ruin, and the aftermath is broken communities and societies. Divorce in the world is understandable as the couples do not have the hope of Christ, but when an increasing number of Christian couples start following this pattern, there is cause for alarm. Knowing these truths should compel us, future wives, to be prepared to stand against these forces of opposition. Two of the ways we can do that are through prayer and fasting.
The powers of darkness work in so many ways to frustrate and kill marital relationships: Proverbs 5:2-24 warns about the danger of adultery, the love of money is the root of all evil (1 Timothy 6:10) even in marriage, unbroken generational curses in a partner can also torment a relation, etc. We do not wrestle against flesh and blood and the weapons of our warfare are not carnal according to Ephesians 6:12 and 2 Corinthians 10:4, respectively. Therefore, if we desire to resist the powers of darkness as future wives, the work must start now. Prayer is a spiritual discipline with many advantages, such as prevention from falling into temptation (Matthew 26:41) and a great power to produce desired effects, especially when done with a pure heart (James 5:16). Prayer should be a constant necessity in our daily lives instead of a ‘Christian task.’ I think some of us because we rely too much on our parents, friends, lawyers, the police, and doctors, we have placed prayer as a second or third alternative when in need. “Pray without ceasing” says 1 Thessalonians 5:17; not that we should pray every minute of every hour but rather make prayer a daily need to speak to our Heavenly Father, call out to Him, and take a stand against the works of demons in our lives.
When it comes to fasting, the Lord Jesus clearly specified that there are some demonic strongholds that can only be broken with this discipline, Marc 9:29 “So He said to them, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting.” Fasting additionally helps to discern the will of God (Acts 13:2-3) and bring our relationship closer to the Father by ‘killing’ the flesh to feed our spirit. If we can eat 30 days a month, we can surely spare one day a month to put food aside and concentrate on the Lord. I believe when we grasp the reality of the spiritual battles that we’re in as children of God, fasting becomes a personal requirement. When, what, and how to fast is completely depend on you, as the Spirit leads; what’s most important is to exercise the discipline.
It’s also necessary to mention that effective prayer and fasting must be done with a pure heart as noted above. The powers of darkness are not intimidated by wayward, immoral, disobedient, or unsubmissive Christians who pray and fast. That’s why James 4:7 states “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” The sons of Sceva were overpowered and battered by an evil spirit in Acts 19:13-16 because they didn’t follow Christ in spirit and in truth, this should serve us as a lesson.
We will face challenges in our future marriage due to Satan’s determination to destroy unions. If we are equipped in the Lord, especially through prayer and fasting coupled with submission to the Word of God, we will overcome all the works of darkness. “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world”–John 16:33.
