[The man of lawlessness] will use every kind of evil deception to fool those on their way to destruction, because they refuse to love and accept the truth that would save them. So God will cause them to be greatly deceived, and they will believe these lies—2 Thessalonians 2:10-11
Clara is an example of a contemporary pharisee. She is self-righteous, doesn’t heed advice, and never wants to be corrected. She usually says “God loves me so much that’s why He’s blessed me with money…that’s why He’s blessed me with a good job…that’s why He’s blessed me with a good life, etc.” Clara thinks she is the best choir member as she sings more beautifully than others, she brags about her generosity to the poor and how good-looking she is. Let me not forget to mention that Clara loves to complain when things don’t go her way! Oh my goodness, she should get an award for this. She easily gets upset and angry about the littlest things. And finally, Clara is a worry freak; no matter how many times you try to convince her to put her trust in God during challenging times, it goes in one ear and comes out in the other. Yeah, that’s so Clara!
Clara reminds of the above verses in 2 Thessalonians which speak about the devil using the tool of deception in order to entice people. The worst part is that God Himself also allows and causes these people to be “greatly deceived” and believe lies. This, to me, is the greatest danger of all! Many of us trick ourselves into believing that we are always right, we need no counsel, we are good humans, we are going to heaven because of all the good things we have done and continue to do. The Lord has blinded us and we can no longer discern or rebuke ourselves. This is just like the Pharisees during Jesus’ times.
How do we get out of this pit of self-deception? The answer lies in 2 Thessalonians 2:9 “because they refuse to love and accept the truth that would save them.” In order to be delivered, we need to love AND accept the truth of the Word of God. We need to spend quality not quantity time studying the Bible, accept God’s Word in an objective manner, and apply it in our daily lives. The reason Clara has become what she is, is due to her lack of proper knowledge of God’s truth and her constant refusal to be corrected.
Do you identify with Clara? I’m sure if you are ‘a Clara person’, your answer will obviously be no. But just do this for yourself, ask the Lord sincerely to reveal the areas of disobedience that you may have been blind to, and ask the Holy Spirit to help you submit to God’s truth. If you really want to be saved and not be among those deceived by the devil and God, the Lord will be with you on this new path of life.
